Ongoing: Duo exhibition IN PARTS in collaboration with Laura Gaiger
IN PARTS exhibtion in collaboration with Laura Gaiger. Poster made by Charlotte Besuijen
An informal collaboration between the two artists began in 2024, building on shared methods and approaches to making artworks which draw upon the format of the collage.
Collage, by definition, is made of fragments with prior existence. It puts the individuality of the artists at arm’s length and subverts the sanctity of the artwork through tearing, cutting, appropriating, and disrupting. It allows them to be provisional, acting sometimes as arrangers rather than authors. They explore collage both concretely - by assembling scraps in new ways - and conceptually, as a collection of different histories and contexts combined to create a multi-interpretative image or situation.
The artists approach collage from different ends of a spectrum: Laura’s background in painting and Charlotte’s in installation and 3D forms in space. Their practices converge where image, form and object meet. Each fragment they bring in to the collaboration has traces of its past existence while twisting into something new. The exhibition unfolds as a holobiont, one organism made up of different elements which are distinct yet exist in symbiosis, depending on each other for their existence and meaning. Relationships, rather than individual authors or materials, guide the work.
The exhibition will feature sculptural works, including Charlotte’s papier-mâché creatures and Laura’s walkable painted floors, as well as paper collages and paintings that turn the walls into a single collaborative artwork. The exhibition unfolds as a holobiont, one organism made up of different elements which are distinct yet exist in symbiosis, depending on each other for their existence and meaning.
